For Giulia, street art sharpens the senses. Where some may see only bricks and peeling paint, she sees coded messages: the interplay between artist, artwork and location. Learning who created a piece, and why, unlocks a different relationship with the city. Suddenly, the daily commute becomes less routine, more alive.

This is a beautifully produced book, written with expertise and flair, with top-class photography, and worth every penny of the relatively high price-tag. I’ve already made three detours to track down walls and murals I wasn’t previously aware of. Joyous stuff.

UP Mag – Interview 🇬🇧
While there are already a large number of books published on this topic, Riva’s book doesn’t take the lazy approach of featuring only well-known artists like Banksy and Shepherd Fairey (although both are featured). Nor is the book only focused on key areas such as Shoreditch or Brick Lane. While Riva does include chapters on these spots, she also explores locations that aren’t on many people’s radars, from further-out areas such as Croydon and Ealing, to central boroughs like Kensington and Chelsea, which usually don’t feature in books on graffiti.
She also moves away from the traditional interview style of just talking to artists about their work and listing where their pieces can be viewed. Instead she features in-depth conversations, exploring their thoughts on what London means to them and sharing their recommendations on places to visit and eat. It is these personal insights that makes her book stand apart from the usual graff books.

My Modern Met – Interview 🇬🇧
Going beyond a guide to the city’s best street art, the book takes readers inside the community through 11 interviews with London-based artists. Riva’s interviews with them not only allow them to share their voices but also provide much-needed insight into local neighborhoods and their motivation for working on the street. This layered approach allows readers to have a much deeper appreciation for and understanding of the artwork on the city’s walls.

Artuu Mag – Interview 🇮🇹
“As Seen on the Streets of…” non è solo una collana di guide.

It’s not just about interviews either. The book digs into the history of London graffiti, points you to must-see murals and areas, drops a detailed Google Map for getting around, and shares behind-the-wall stories that explain the meaning and motivation behind key pieces. There’s also plenty of off-the-radar tips for anyone trying to explore beyond the usual spots.

Artuu Mag – Book Review 🇮🇹

The book moves from paste-ups to abstract murals, from figurative painting to installations, and from unsanctioned interventions to commissioned works. Yet its true depth lies in the artists themselves. Their personal perspectives and insider tips reveal multiple Londons: one artist is drawn to the spiritual atmosphere of Chinatown, another to the city’s food culture, others to its parks and canal paths. Together, these voices reflect not only a wide range of artistic practices, but also the character of London itself. A city shaped by overlapping histories, cultures, and viewpoints, and defined by the constant exchange between them.
