I’m Giulia Blocal, a writer specialising in street art and graffiti. I’ve been documenting this world since 2011 and publishing Beyond the Walls since 2014, following the artwork itself as closely as the cities and people around it.
Street art is where I start, but rarely where the story ends. A mural can lead into questions about how a neighbourhood is changing, who gets to shape public space, or what happens when street culture becomes part of tourism.
Much of what I write comes from being on the ground, walking cities and talking to people from the scene, as well as from my work with street art festivals and museums and the research behind my books.
Beyond the Walls is where I bring those observations together, whether I’m looking closely at an artist’s work or following a wider question about the city around it. I want it to help you discover work worth seeking out and understand more of what you’re looking at.
You don’t need to be an expert in street art to read it. Curiosity is enough.
What to expect
Beyond the Walls changes from month to month depending on what I’m researching, where I’ve been and what has caught my attention. Some editions stay close to a single artwork or artist, while others follow a wider question through the city around it.

They bring together the street art and murals worth seeking out with the bookshops, museums, cafés and restaurants that become part of my experience of a city, often through recommendations of local artists and people of the scene.
Over time, they have become my travel notebooks in map form, and I keep them updated as cities change.
