Political Street Art in Rome Born out of a fierce need for expression of strong social disadvantage, every year street art is becoming more and more vanilla.

The spreading of urban art festivals has a lot to do with it: curators usually want something aesthetically nice, which will please everybody.

It’s gone from a tool to convey radical political messages. Now street art has become a ‘tool’ to decorate walls – probably the cheapest way for public administrations to show that some action has been taken to redevelop the outskirts, even if they’re only putting up a façade (no pun intended).

My favorite markets in Rome

My weekends are consecrated to market shopping. From food to flea markets, I re-emerge from the cacophony of new deals only on Sunday evening.

I could never buy my food in the cool and perfect indifference of a supermarket, which is why I’m always keen to explore a different farmers’ market in town. I like it when the nose-tingling aroma of spices mixes with the smell of freshly slaughtered meat, baked goods and unique cheeses. I breath in all those aromas while walking in the dense, colourful throng, with my huge ‘market bag’ swinging into people’s legs and getting fuller by the minute.

While I travel and write about amazing street art from all around Europe, there is a lot going on in my hometown too. Honestly, I’ve never thought I couldn’t keep up with Rome’s street art scene, but that’s what happened during this spring, so I’m writing a blogpost collecting what’s new on the streets of Rome, including some older works that I still hadn’t review on this blog. street art by BLU in Rome In Rome, as in so many other cities – from Europe to South America – the most political street artist is BLU: a 30-something Italian guy whose identity is hushed – although his art speaks loudly.

BLU always highlights political and social issues, often painting on squats and forgotten areas of the cities. His works are always over-abundant with metaphors, allegories and symbols, through which he expresses his dissident point of view of our society.
